Life after the tsunami

Damaged structure of the former tsunami alert centre in Minamisanriku, one of the few remaining buildings standing after the 2011 tsunami that destroyed 95 per cent of the town and many other locations in northeast Japan. Only the tallest buildings remained and roughly half the population was unaccounted for during the days following the disaster. Around 10 thousand people only were confirmed alive and evacuated in the first week. However, in late June 2011, a total of 1206 were counted as dead or missing.
