The Kurdish revolution in Syria

August 12, 2012 - Kafa Safra, Efrin, Syria: A Syrian Kurdish man passes by wearing a t-shirt with the face of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader, Abdullah Öcalan...PKK has been fighting an armed struggle against the Turkish state for an autonomous Kurdistan and greater cultural and political rights for the Kurds in Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran. Founded on 27 November 1978 in the village of Fis, was led by Abdullah Öcalan. The PKK's ideology was originally a fusion of revolutionary socialism and Kurdish nationalism - although since his imprisonment, Öcalan has abandoned orthodox Marxism. The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, the European Union and NATO. (Paulo Nunes dos Santos)
